article About S$2 food (US$1.50) in the East - (all-vga-corner)

In today's newspaper, ekampong has setup a new webpage that brings attention to people living in the East Singapore about food stalls that sell food for S$2 or less.

This is a good initiative to highlight value-for-money food stalls to all. But I wonder will the message reach the poor? Singapore, no doubt, is ranked the 2nd most richest country in Asia based on Finfacts, just ahead of Hong Kong. However, we still have beggars and aging population issues. They may not have access to internet or newspaper so this information may not be helpful to them at all.

Food lovers may like to try these stores but they are after fine dining with wines and these value food stores may not appeal to them. This bring one question to my mind - Are the food filling and taste good? Perhaps the website should collate feedback via polls or comments on their recommendations. Those that fail the mark shall be taken out from the list. The key considerations are:

1) Price;
2) Portion; and
3) Taste

When I go through the list, I noticed most of the stores sell basically the same type of food. There is no distinct features blending into the stall's culture. The types of food are based on fast-food style to provide quick meal for the masses. This explains the successful foodchain business concept of Kopitiam and Koufu in many shopping centres.

My conclusion maybe slightly sad. Singapore is a 1st world nation with a 3rd world mentality. We seek no style and class in food. We are after for money and time. We are efficient and complete projects in time but we neglect our food intakes. Apparently, the consequence is the growing cases of health issues among Singaopreans who are getting fatter and unhealthy due to their rojak lifestyle.

article About Any S$2 lunch in Toa Payoh? - (all-vga-corner)

I am a food lover and accidentally found this outlet which is very popular in Toa Poyah.

While our basic staple rice still rising to record high, it is nearly impossible to locate a food store that serves the public with good food to fill their stomach at S$2 flat.

You can either order:

1) 2 meat + 2 veg + rice
2) 1 fish + 1 meat + 2 veg + rice

Isn't that a steal?

This explains the long queue which you can see in the picture during a sunday 12.30pm peak period.

The food is good and filling. What else do you buy for S$2 in Orchard Road?

Now the location: Toa Payoh Lor 7, Blk 22.

If you have other recommendations, please keep me posted.

I did a web search for S$2 and locate a list in hardwarezone. It maybe outdated but none the less, an excellent guide for food hunter.

If inflation keeps rising, I wonder how many stores will remain selling at S$2. Afterall, profit must cover cost to survive in businesses.
